Another Season
Not good at long goodbyes, but I want to write that it has been a wonderful run with the Bandits, including the five recent NLL Finals appearances and the team’s back-to-back-to-back championships.
Last Saturday’s defeat to the Georgia Swarm was devastating, given the rungs on the ladder climbed this season to earn a playoff spot.
The determination of every player, including those who didn’t play a minute, to rise from a 4-6 record, win seven in a row, and finish 11-7 was a phenomenal feat given the parity of this league.
Yes, this one is going to leave a mark, and it hurts, but the accomplishments of this group and organization will be cherished and remembered for a long time.
27 seasons in the playoffs, 14 final appearances, and seven total championships, especially the last three, are outstanding. A definite dynasty, as evidenced by all the players who contributed throughout the recent runs.
This team will be back and in contention.
I have no quotes from players, coaches, or management in this season-ending edition, other than my thanks to those inside and outside who provided compelling thoughts in the previous 26 issues of Fast Break.
While I did break postgame protocol by going into the team’s dressing room after Saturday night’s defeat, it was a personal pursuit to go in and shake the hands of each and every player and thank them for a great run.
As I began stepping over equipment bags in front of every stall, my eyes focused on each player I approached, most in a slumping position, well after the game had ended, my hand extended to shake, I earnestly said to each: “Thank you.”
A reply was not necessary, but as I went down the line, every player stood, looked me in the eye, shook my hand, and offered quiet thanks. To say the least, I was deeply moved by their honor toward me.
As I exited the Bandits’ visiting dressing room, I knew there would be some I would see for the last time in that setting. The next generation of Bandits awaits in the wings, and there is plenty of draft capital to enhance the crop.
This team, whatever roster combinations there might be, will be back and in contention.
Thank you to all the citizens of Banditland. Your support continues to amaze me, both at home and on the road. You are the most important part of our success.
Have a great summer!
