The Buffalo Bandits roster is guaranteed to see some change this summer thanks to a pair of expansion teams joining the NLL.
The Philadelphia Wings and San Diego Seals are set begin play this upcoming season and they will take center stage at the Expansion Draft on July 16 and the Entry Draft, which will be held this fall.
Philadelphia will select first in the Expansion Draft, where current member clubs are able to protect a total of eleven players, comprised of either one goalie and ten runners or eleven runners and no goalie.
In both scenarios, only five of the protected runners can be offensive players, and that list is subject to Commissioner Nick Sakiewicz’s approval. In addition, no member club shall be required to lose more players than the number of expansion teams entering the Expansion Draft. Clubs are not allowed to protect more players once a current player has been drafted.
At the Entry Draft, both expansion teams will have picks in the first round. They will have one additional selection at the end of the second, third and fourth rounds. The order of selection will be reversed in each alternating round with San Diego picking first overall, thanks to a coin toss win on June 2. The Bandits currently hold the third and fourth overall picks in the draft.
So which players will Buffalo protect and which players will be moving on to San Diego and Philadelphia? The lacrosse world can begin speculating when protected players lists are due July 2.
