The Buffalo Bandits (5-6) dropped their third straight game to the Colorado Mammoth (4-7) Saturday night in Denver. John Grant Jr. had three goals and five assists to lead the Mammoth to their 16-13 victory. The win is the Mammoth’s second straight overall, and fourth straight against the Bandits.
Adam Jones—he of a hat trick performance in his last game against Buffalo—opened the scoring two and a half minutes into the game to give the Mammoth a 1-0 lead. Shawn Williams and Aaron Wilson were able to answer for the Bandits, and gave their team a 2-1 lead.
Jordan McBride scored to tie the game later in the first, but Bandits forward Mike Hominuck scored in his return to the lineup to give the Bandits a 3-2 lead heading into the second quarter.
The lead wouldn’t last too long, as the second quarter would be all Mammoth. Jamie Lincoln scored three minutes into the quarter to tie the game at 3. Jordan McBride would start and finish a run of three goals in two minutes to complete a hat trick for him. Adam Jones added another tally in between McBride’s goals.
Bandits leading goal scorer Dhane Smith was able to stop the run, and forward Derek Hopcroft scored 30 seconds after Smith to get the Bandits within one, 6-5. The Mammoth’s Sean Pollock, however, closed out the scoring in the second to give his team a 7-5 advantage.
Pollock’s goal was the start of a four-goal Mammoth run that continued into the third quarter. Casey Powell scored in his Mammoth debut, John Grant Jr. added a goal, and McBride scored his fourth goal of the game and the Mammoth were up by a score of 10-5 just like that.
The Bandits were able to push back in the quarter, as they answered with a 4-0 run of their own in to end the third quarter. Hopcroft, John Tavares, Jamie Rooney, and Scott Priolo (his first of the season) all netted goals to get the Bandits to within one headed into the final stanza of the game.
The Mammoth looked poised to crush the Bandits comeback hopes with another 4-0 goal run. John Grant Jr. scored two goals in a minute and 20 seconds and Creighton Reid and Joel Dargano added goals to give the Mammoth a 14-9 lead.
The Bandits were able to push right back again, and had another four-goal run of their own. Jamie Rooney scored his second, Hopcroft completed a hat trick in his season debut, and Williams and Hominuck added goals to bring the Bandits back to within one, 14-13.
That’s as far as the comeback would get, as Richard Morgan and Ryan Hotaling added empty net goals to clinch the 16-13 victory for the Mammoth.
The Bandits will return home next weekend to faceoff against the Edmonton Rush (6-5) for the first time. Game time is set for 7:30 PM at the First Niagara Center.
