Williams, Self earn spots as alternates

The Buffalo Bandits today announced that John Tavares will serve as the team’s captain for the 2013 season. The team also announced that Scott Self and Shawn Williams have been selected as alternate captains for 2013.
Tavares earns the honor entering his 22nd season with the team. While the 2013 season will mark the forward’s debut as captain, the 19-time NLL All-Pro selection has long been synonymous with the Buffalo Bandits. The forward has led the Bandits in scoring in all but four of his 21 seasons – including each of the last two years – and has scored nearly 20 percent of the franchise’s goals on his way to leading all players in franchise history in every offensive category.
Tavares’s accolades aren’t limited to franchise records. In addition to leading all players in NLL history in career goals (765), assists (862) and points (1,627), the Mississauga, Ontario native has produced at a pace unmatched by any other player in league history. Despite his longevity, he leads all players in NLL history – including anyone who has ever appeared in even one NLL game – in goals per game, assists per game and points per game.
Self becomes the team’s alternate captain in his third full season back with the team after making his NLL debut in a single game with Buffalo in 2001. In 2012, Self led all Bandits defensemen in scoring with 17 points and led the team with 78 loose balls, tying his career high with six goals. He also appeared in his third career NLL All-Star Game, tallying a goal and three assists.
Williams returns to Buffalo in 2013 after spending the 2000 and 2001 seasons with the Bandits. Since then, the Oshawa, Ontario native has amassed 412 career goals (fifth in NLL history) and 625 assists (fourth), for a total of 1,037 points (sixth).
