This week's Girl of the Week, Amanda, resides in Bandit Land, also known as Buffalo, NY. Amanda has been a member of the Bandettes for the past two years and intends on trying out for this upcoming season's squad, anxious to once again experience the thrill that comes from dancing at Bandits home games.
"My favorite part about cheering on the Bandits is being able to perform our versatile routines for the crazy fans," says Amanda. "I have been to countless sporting events, but nothing compares to the energy and atmosphere of Bandits games. The fans are so dedicated and crazy; I get such an adrenaline rush performing out on the field from them.
"My other favorite part is the group of girls I dance with," she continues. "I have developed very close friendships with most of the girls. I don't know what I'd do with out them."
For Amanda, the Bandettes serve as an outlet from the stress that comes from being a full-time graduate student at Canisius College. This is where she is currently studying for her Master's Degree in Physical Education and Health. She also received her Bachelor's Degree from Canisius for the same major in May 2008. Eventually, she would like to add another Master's Degree in Athletic Administration and become an Athletic Director.
As for dancing, it may come as a surprise that Amanda had never taken a formal dance class before joining the Bandettes team. Instead, she says her 13 years of competitive gymnastics and time on the cheerleading squads at her high school and Canisius "gave me the basics of what I knew before becoming a Buffalo Bandette."
She says her favorite Bandit player is Billy Dee Smith, and credits "the fast pace and intensity of the sport" as a big reason why lacrosse is so exciting to watch. However, another aspect of the game really stands out to her.
"What amazes me is that these players aren't just professional athletes. They also have full-time jobs outside of lacrosse!"
If Amanda isn't busy cheering on the Bandits or studying for her next exam, you can probably find her somewhere enjoying her perfect day "at the beach, soaking up the sunshine."
